The weather looks warm and gorgeous for tomorrow's

The weather looks warm and gorgeous for tomorrow's Medicinal Plant Sale, so we decided to make a few batches of homemade ice cream for sundaes! Dairy free mango and strawberry, and a dairy vanilla...all organic ingredients. And we'll be making some fresh herbal syrups this evening to drizzle over the top. Yum! 😍

So please feel free to swing by for a sundae, even if you don't need any more plants! $4/sundae and all proceeds go towards continuing the construction of our gazebo classroom up the hill.

The spring mud finally dried out enough in the pasture for us to get back to playing all our favorite nature games!

This Earth Warrior is a longtime homeschool friend who started coming to camp many years ago, and now he’s old enough to be one of my helpers. As you can see, his mad skills are an inspiration! We were all a bit in awe today!

Our sign has been in dire need of maintenance for quite some time. This entire metal sign was busted out and blown into the ditch by one of those 50mi/hr wind storms last winter. And the little wooden bits followed along. I finally retrieved them all once the snow melted and today we pieced it back together. A little fresh paint, and some new stain on the posts and I think it looks even better than before!

The trick is that any maintenance in this location involves standing in our only patch of poison ivy. This was Scarlet and my solution today…trash bags taped over our boots. 😆 And then a thorough wash with Tecnu soap afterwards just in case.

So sometimes projects take awhile around here. This railing idea started about three years ago, as I was dreaming up a way to follow the curve of our earth bag stairs. On a walk on the land, I noticed some buckthorn that needed to be removed, that happened to have these interesting shapes. So we cut them down, the Earth Warriors helped peeled the bark…and then it sat for a good long while as I tried to figure out how to install it. Let’s just say there was some trial and error. A LOT of trial and error, trying to find the exact flow for the twists and turns, and how in the world to attach it securely to the posts. It sat again, partially installed, for more than a year. But I had a flash of inspiration this weekend and when that happens I’ve got to just roll with it. I decided to sand it down, stain in Kona brown, and poly it in gloss. And then add some more secure bracing to hold it in place. What do you think?! I’m kind of in love.

First fresh tea of the season!

The tulsi in the greenhouse already started to flower so I had to trim it back to encourage the more growth. So I guess tea was in order! Isn’t that such a beautiful golden color? And the aroma…there’s nothing quite like holy basil. Calming, uplifting, nostalgic…mmm.

The tulsi plants will be available this Sunday at our Medicinal Plant Sale. Stop on by anytime from 11-4.

Stinging Nettle season! It makes me laugh how muc

Stinging Nettle season!

It makes me laugh how much the kids love these. They happily volunteer to run down the hill to pick some (with gloves on) so we can cook them over the fire. With butter and salt…SO TASTY! The plate lasts about 5 seconds as they reach in to devour them. 😆

In case it’s not obvious, cooking the nettles in any way, or drying them, removes the sting. No children were harmed in the making of this snack. ☺️

Ok so the Earth Warriors have been begging for years for me to get them a zip line. They even worked together to clear all the buckthorn out of the way, so I finally went ahead and bought one. Thankfully I had some tall helpers who set it all up, and this was me taking it for a test run. 😆 We still need to build a little platform so it’s easier to hop on, but gosh that was fun!

Kids and Their Gardens

The Earth Warriors have been eager to plant their new gardens so we’ve been doing a little bit each week. And then I checked the extended forecast and saw another frost is unlikely, so we went ahead and planted everything we could, seeds and seedlings, flowers and veggies.

Some of our seedlings got a little leggy in the greenhouse this year, with the cold and cloudy spring I guess, so they were very happy to get in the ground finally.

I’m excited to see how this space transforms over the season. The kids have big plans for feasting on all the goodies!

Our beloved Rainbow Table finally succumbed to the

Our beloved Rainbow Table finally succumbed to the elements and comically collapsed when an Earth Warrior tossed their backpack onto it a couple weeks ago. In fairness, it’s likely almost 40 years old, as it’s the table from my childhood.

My parents gave it to us when we were still living in the bus and needed a “dining table” for our outdoor kitchen. We promptly painted over the taupe in rainbow.

Since then it has become our greeting place for camp and a bright entry to our home.

So I of course had to rebuild it. With all new wood, and a few solid coats of paint, it is as good as new!

This table (and several others) will be filled to the brim in a couple weeks for our Medicinal Plant Sale & Farm Stand Season Opening. Sunday, May 28, 11-4. (More details at the link in our bio.)

The wild plum blossoms popped open yesterday and the bees took no time at all to find them! It only lasts for a handful of days but the smell is so intoxicating.

Also, my 3 year old niece is here for a visit today as you can hear. I thought maybe we’d do a little gardening together, but we planted 3 pea seeds…then did 5 art projects, a puzzle, went for 2 walks, dug out our old Legos, and read 285 storybooks, but no nap. 😆 I forgot how much more talkative 3 year olds are than my teenagers. 💛

I finished transplanting the remaining 500 herb seedlings yesterday while the thunderstorm rattled outside. This is the result! An organized greenhouse with the seedlings all tucked in and comfy.

I’ve been slow to wake up from winter hibernatio

I’ve been slow to wake up from winter hibernation this year, but sometime last week spring finally hit me and I’ve suddenly had the gumption to be up at the crack of dawn again working in the greenhouse.

We were busting at the seams with our medicinal seedlings and the Earth Warriors garden plants so I rounded up some scrap lumber and built more shelves. With a few new grow lights, it seems to be working swell! What do you think?

Also, yes, it appears we will have a surplus of healthy medicinal herbs again, and plan to host our plant sale Memorial Day weekend! More details to come…

Our greenhouse is overflowing already with both our medicine plants and the seedlings for the Earth Warriors garden beds. And we have run out of pots!

Do you possibly have any plastic 3” or 4” pots that you’d be willing to donate? I would happily give you a discount at our plant sale at the end of May as a thank you.

The kids have been helping in the greenhouse a little bit each week, excitedly transplanting their cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and a dozen other veggies and flowers they picked out for their gardens. These are some sunflowers that got a bit leggy before we could get them into a bigger pot. Whoops! Thankfully they are filling out nicely now and should be ready for planting in a few weeks!

Well Happy Birthday to me! What a bizarre storm! Torrential rain last night, then thunder, hail, wind, and apparently 13” of snow while we slept. It was a trek to check on the plant babies in the greenhouse this morning. But they were safe and sound and plenty warm.

A got a bee in my bonnet! I woke up Saturday morning and decided to refinish my countertops. Well…finish those dark ones for the first time. Remember how I got those installed a couple winters ago and promised to finish the polyurethane coats? Ha! And the center island had started to warp a little, frankly it was installed crooked and bothered me ever since. So I threw a few sheets over it, and hung out underneath with a sander for a couple hours. Then restained it, and started the several coats of poly. It looks so pretty and smooth! The girls came home and have been hugging the countertops saying how satisfying they look. 😆
