HANDS-ON MEDICINE MAKING
Join us for this 9-month series of Herbal Medicine at the Homestead. We’ll gather in the homestead kitchen, explore the medicinal hillside gardens, occasionally brew our medicine together over the open fire, and in general have a deeply connective time with the plants and each other.
Each month you’ll leave with a hand-made herbal product and the knowledge of how to make your own in the future.

Herbal Bitters & Tincture Making
Spring is the perfect time to give our digestive system a little love and bitters are a traditional way to help clear the heaviness often consumed throughout the long winter. Learn all about this alcohol-based tincture and the creative ways it can be used. We will also cover tincture making strategies in general, and choose from our homestead grown plant allies to create a personal blend.
You’ll leave with a jar each of custom-made bitters and herbal tincture.

Herbal Bone Broth, Infusions, & Tea

Food as medicine! We will learn about making medicinal bone broth, nutritive herbal infusions, and cooking with deeply restorative plants like nettles. Nourishing and tonifying herbs are one of the safest and easiest methods to get more herbal medicine and nutrients into our daily lives.
You’ll leave with a jar of richly medicinal bone broth and a custom-made infusion.

Herbal Salve, Lip Balm, & Sunscreen
Salves are a staple in any medicine makers tool kit. We will learn the basics of salve-making, as well as the qualities of different plant medicine to include…for aches and pains, wound care, skin soothing and more. And we will discuss how to adapt the basic recipe to make lip balm and sunscreen.
You’ll leave with your own luxury lip balm and jar of healing salve, a necessity for the herbal First Aid kit.

Botanical Water Kefir

Water kefir is a delicious probiotic drink that is a creative way to support our gut health with plant medicine right from our backyards. You will learn the ins and outs of these little creatures, and taste test a few fun options before putting together your own custom blend to take home.
You’ll leave with a jar of your own fizzy probiotic drink and some starter grains for future batches!

Herbal Syrups
Herbal syrups are a traditional way to make some less tasty medicine more palatable, but they are also a playful way to dress up drinks, or add a unique herbal element to desserts and sauces. We’ll learn about several of the fun ways to use herbal syrups, as well as some suggestions for different plant medicine to use.
You’ll leave with your own jar of syrup with herbs we harvest together from the gardens.

Botanical Bundle Dyeing

Using herbs and flowers right from the garden to create colorful dye and pigment can be a beautiful way to connect with the plants. We will learn the basics of successful natural dyeing and experiment with bundle dyeing and other techniques, using a variety of herbs, flowers, leaves, and kitchen scraps to create a personal design on silk.
You’ll leave with two colorful and uniquely designed silk scarves.

Elderberry Syrup & Herbal Lozenges
Elderberry syrup is a go-to cold and flu season remedy, essential for the fall herbal medicine cabinet. We’ll learn the powerful immunity boosting qualities of Sambucus nigra, along with the other supportive ingredients in our recipe, and make a delicious healing syrup together. We’ll also learn the basics of making herbal lozenges and mix up a batch to share.
You’ll leave with your own jar of elderberry syrup and bag of lozenges in preparation for the winter season on its way.

Fall is the perfect time to prepare our immune-boosting remedies for the season ahead. This powerful health tonic is made with apple cider vinegar and several well-known traditional herbs and common kitchen ingredients. The combined alchemy of this potent recipe is a supportive way to start your day through the cold season.
You’ll leave with your own beautiful jar of Fire Cider.

Hand-Dipped Beeswax Candles
We will end our series with the intoxicating scent of beeswax filling the kitchen! There is nothing quite like the warm glow of a beeswax candle, flickering in the waning light of fall. The natural (and very local) beeswax is preferred over any other candle material, free of toxics and allergens, as the cleanest burn possible. We’ll share all the tips and techniques we’ve learned over the last 15 years of candle-dipping, to ensure a successful hand-made creation.
You’ll leave with your own pair of hand-dipped candles to light your home in the upcoming winter season.

We also have a sliding scale scholarship fund for all programs. Please do not let cost prevent your participation. Contact us about your specific needs.
Cancellation Policy
Your payment includes a 25% non-refundable deposit. If you need to cancel your reservation for any reason prior to 7 days before the session date, we will refund your payment minus the deposit amount. We provide all materials for each session, and due to our preparation time, cancellations made 6 days or less prior to the session are not refundable.
